iOS 17: Top new features and upgrades

  • FaceTime users can now video voicemail, for the times when someone can’t pick up the call. Live voicemail also transcribes messages in real-time, so you can see who’s calling without picking up.
  • The Check-in feature lets family and friends automatically know when you’ve made it home safely. This can also notify people if you’ve hit a hurdle, with information like battery level and the route you’ve taken.
  • AirDrop is getting an upgrade called NameDrop, which lets you share information, files, and kickstart SharePlay experiences by bumping two iPhones together.
  • The Journal app is coming to iPhone this year, with personalized suggestions and writing prompts to help you document what you’ve done and where you’ve been.
  • Standby mode essentially turns your iPhone into a smart display, offering information at a glance with easy-to-digest pages and voice controls.
  • The “Hey Siri” command will soon just be “Siri”, and Apple’s voice assistant will soon support back-to-back commands without saying the wake word multiple times.
  • Apple Maps will soon support Offline downloads, so you can get around without a live internet connection

What is StandBy in iOS 17?

StandBy is like a personal concierge for your iPhone when you’re not using it. When we’re charging our phones, don’t we all just wish sometimes that we didn’t have to pick up the phone while it’s tethered to its life juice to see some information?

Simply turn your iPhone on its side while charging, and voila! You’re greeted with a full-screen experience that’s designed to be viewed at a distance. Perfect for your nightstand, kitchen counter, or desk.

Your iPhone can display a range of things in StandBy mode, from beautiful clock styles to photos

Apple is changing the ‘Hey Siri’ trigger phrase to just ‘Siri’ in iOS 17

Apple is changing Siri’s trigger phrase from “Hey Siri” to just “Siri.” The change, part of iOS 17, will make it easier to summon the virtual assistant on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other devices and follows a report from Bloomberg in November that Apple was working on moving Siri to a single wake word.

AirDrop

Apple will now automatically block nudes sent over AirDrop in iOS 17, the company shared. The feature comes as a package aimed at enhancing communication safety, even as Apple makes it easier to share photos, contact details, and more among iPhone owners.

The company lists the new change under privacy in a press release it issued following WWDC 2023, noting that it was an expansion of the communication safety features it had previously billed as aimed at protecting children. Now, people who try to send explicit images either over AirDrop or by the new Contact Posters and FaceTime messages will find their images blurred by default. Based on how it currently works in the Messages app, users will be able to block the offending contact or message someone they trust for support.

Privacy and Security

Communication Safety

Communication Safety now includes protections for sensitive videos and photos. And it extends beyond Messages to include content sent and received in AirDrop, the systemwide photo picker, FaceTime messages, Contact Posters in the Phone app, and third‑party apps.

Sensitive Content Warning

You now have the option to blur sensitive photos and videos before you choose to view them. This feature will be available in Messages, AirDrop, Contact Posters in the Phone app, FaceTime messages, and third‑party apps.
